Accreditation & Quality

Accreditation

ROYAL REHAB has been continuously accredited by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) since 1992. The ACHS is an independent, not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to improving the quality and safety of health care in Australia through continual review or performance, assessment and accreditation.

The ACHS defines accreditation as “The national recognition of organisations that demonstrate significant achievements and improvements in relation to contemporary established health care standards.” The framework for quality improvement and for providing quality and safe care and services is found in the ACHS EQuIP (Evaluation and Quality Improvement Program) standards. The standards address the issues considered most important in providing quality and safe health care.

EQuIP has Benefits

The benefits of EQuIP go beyond accreditation and include:

Commitment to Quality

Quality is defined by ACHS as:

“The extent to which the properties of a service or product produces a desired outcome.”

The ROYAL REHAB is committed to continuous improvement throughout the organisation, and provides staff with the necessary resources and support to facilitate this improvement. For example, the Board provides $25,000 for annual Quality Grants and invites units and services to forward projects that demonstrate improvements for Quality Awards (local, regional and state). Quality Day is celebrated, with all units, services and departments encouraged to present in-progress and completed projects. The Quality Council awards prizes for displays and completed Quality Projects meeting award criteria award prizes.

The ROYAL REHAB aligns its quality program with the NSW Health Quality Framework and, where appropriate, the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health quality activities, as an affiliated organisation. The Quality Program is updated each financial year and is distributed to all units, departments and services.

Leadership and Involvement

The Quality Council provides leadership in developing a culture of continuous improvement across the Centre and identifies personnel to educate staff in understanding and contributing towards the quality improvement process. It reviews and monitors Quality Plans, provides a forum for information exchange on quality activities and also manages the Quality Improvement Grant Process. In addition, each unit / service has representation on a Quality Action Group, whereby members act as a resource for their colleagues, encourage local level quality improvement activities and assist colleagues with award and grant applications, with guidance provided by the Accreditation and Risk Manager.

Quality is Continual

EQuIP has been designed by ACHS to assist organisations to establish an effective continuous improvement program. This program uses standards and self-assessment processes to identify opportunities for improvement and assistance in producing improvement. The Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney provides regular updates to ACHS regarding progress in specific areas and guides units and services to stay focused on their improvement programs, and therefore make genuine improvements to the standard of service provided to internal and external customers.
