Adult Rehabilitation
The Adult Rehabilitation Unit specialises in providing multi-disciplinary rehabilitation programs for people of working age who have sustained stroke, orthopaedic injuries, amputation, neurological diseases, non-traumatic brain injury, burns and brain tumours.
It comprises an inpatient and outpatient program, which offers a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation service on an in-patient basis. Community rehabilitation programs are also available to those living in the Northern Sydney Area.
Home Based Rehabilitation
The Home Based Rehabilitation Service provides intensive short duration rehabilitation
to clients in their home environment. Clients with a range of conditions such
as stroke can be cared for at home once the client is medically stable and the
home environment is safe.
The Service will accept clients who are residents of the Northern Sydney Area
Health Service, have suffered recent injury, illness or undergone surgery or
have experienced an exacerbation of chronic musculoskeletal or neurological
condition. Clients must also have achievable rehabilitation goals, are clinically
appropriate for the service and consent to receive their rehabilitation at home.
The team consists of an administrative officer, medical officer, occupational
therapist, physiotherapist, registered nurse and social worker with access to
speech pathology, dietetics and neuropsychology. The service has been in operation
since September 1999.
Driving Assessment Centre
The Driving Assessment Centre promotes independence in driving for people with
a range of disabilities or medical problems. The Centre provides driving assessments and re-training programs and assists people with special needs who may need advice and assistance to acquire their licence for the first time.
It has specialised neurological services with close links to the RNSH Stroke hospital service, Stroke Recovery Association, ROYAL REHAB Driver training program, ROYAL REHAB Home Based Rehabilitation Service as well as amputee clinics and spasticity clinics. In addition, the service is involved in several research programs including an NHMRC exercise program for stroke patients.
