Aged Care Rehabilitation Unit

The Aged Care Rehabilitation Unit provides multi-disciplinary aged care and rehabilitation to clients following illness, injury or surgery. Clients are typically over the age of 60 and live in the Ryde/Hunters Hill/Gladesville area. The Dixson Unit is part of the Ryde Aged Care and Rehabilitation Service.

It is a 20-bed unit, which offers individualised inpatient rehabilitation. The Unit most commonly manages orthopaedic conditions (fractures, degenerative joint problems and joint replacements), strokes and amputations. Clients are also referred to the Unit who have difficulty coping at home due to cardiovascular, respiratory and other system diseases.

Services and Programs

The Unit provides 24 hour care which is focused on providing round the clock rehabilitation. This is planned and evaluated by a multi-disciplinary team with specialised aged care interest, knowledge and training. The team works with each client to produce a tailored plan of management with individualised goals. Families are encourages to participate during all phases of the rehabilitation process.

Time spent in the Unit varies according to need and typically is 2 - 4 weeks. The Unit is part of a continuum of comprehensive rehabilitation extending into the community and delivered through close links with other agencies including:

Dedicated therapy areas with a comprehensive range of therapy equipment are available in the Unit. Hydrotherapy is available for those assessed as appropriate. All clients are assessed in their own homes and home modification recommendation made prior to discharge.

The Unit is an accredited training position for rehabilitation specialists and hosts students from all other disciplines.
