Medical

The Medical Service works in partnership with each Unit to facilitate individual rehabilitation programs for clients of the Royal Rehab.

The medical staff includes the Directors of the Units, visiting medical and dental staff and the registrars in Rehabilitation Medicine. Staff specialists provide overall supervision of clients rehabilitation program, investigate and treat medical issues, monitor progress and provide information about medication, test results and follow up. They have a role in coordinating and monitoring client's rehabilitation programs and are in close contact with client's families. The medical staff work with inpatients, outpatients and community clients.

Our rehabilitation medical specialties include spinal injury, brain injury and adult rehabilitation. A variety of outpatient clinics operate including amputee and orthotics clinics. Staff specialists participate in and contribute to statewide working groups and committees as well as national and international conferences.

As an affiliated teaching hospital of the University of Sydney with a strong commitment to teaching and research, the Royal Rehab has four training positions for Registrars in Rehabilitation Medicine. These four positions are spinal injury rehabilitation, brain injury rehabilitation, rehabilitation and older people and general rehabilitation that is mainly neurological. The positions are accredited training positions with the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine. Weekly training sessions are provided in addition to daily on-the-job supervision. Overseas training positions are also supported. A part-time registrar position in Developmental Disability rehabilitation is also affiliated with the medical service.
