3 New Rehabilitation Nursing Monographs

In October 2007, the Rehabilitation Nursing Research and Development Unit at Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney released 3 new monographs. Two monographs present aspects of Julie Pryor’s doctoral research. The third presents the findings of an innovative rehabilitation nursing practice development project.

Monograph 10 (124 pages) is titled, Coaching patients to self-care. This monograph sheds light on an everyday problem that nurses encounter, namely, incongruence between nurses’ and patients’ understandings and expectations of rehabilitation. It also presents in detail how nurses address this problem through coaching patients to self-care and in so doing showcases rehabilitation nursing practice.

Monograph 11 (67 pages) is titled, Opting in and opting out: A grounded theory of nursing’s contribution to inpatient rehabilitation. This monograph presents the theory that arose from Julie doctoral research. This theory, which integrates all the findings into a conceptual whole, is presented as a story line as well as graphically. It highlights how contextual factors influence the practice of nursing.

Monograph 12 (163 pages) is titled, Developing rehabilitation nursing practice at Peter James Centre. This monograph presents findings of the first research-based evaluation of a rehabilitation nursing practice development initiative undertaken in Australia. A mixed methods approach was used, involving patients, clinical nurses, their managers.

All 12 rehabilitation nursing monographs can be purchased from the at Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney.
