Pulmonary Rehabilitation
Step Out
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is for you!
- Do you get breathless easily?
- Are you finding that you are doing less and less?
- Do you have a chronic lung disease?
- Would you like to be able to do more?
Why should I come to Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
The benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation are well known and supported by research. By the end of a program you can expect:
- Less breathlessness
- to be able to walk further
- Improve muscle condition
- Increased feelings of well-bring
- Increased independence and skill in managing your health
- Improved quality of life!
So what happens at a Step Out Session?
Each person attends Step Out twice a week for eight weeks. You will exercise at both sessions and once a week there will be an education session. There are about ten people in each group. It's a great way to meet new people who understand what it's like living with chronic respiratory condition!
You are welcome to bring a support person with you so that they can see what you are capable of and benefit from the education sessions.
What do I need to bring?
- My Health Record
- Wear loose clothes to allow movement
- Wear runners/joggers
- A bottle of water
- Your puffer, if you carry one
- Mobile oxygen cylinder if you have one
- A smile!
Where is Pulmonary Rehabilitation held?
Step Out Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes are held at Ryde,
Hornsby and Mona Vale Hospitals. You can attend the class that is most convenient for you.
How much does it cost?
Step Out Pulmonary Rehabilitation is provided by RRCS at no cost to you.
Can I get Pulmonary Rehabilitation at home?
ROYAL REHAB works closely with the Acute Post Acute Care (APAC) team and Northern Sydney Home Nursing Service (NSHNS) team to support people with chronic lung disease in the community. If you are too unwell to attend a class at the hospital, we might be able to help you and your carer manage your condition and symptoms at home.
Support Groups
In Northern Sydney there are three Support Groups for people with chronic lung condition.
- Chesties Bonding at Brookvale
- Step Out Support Group at Royal North Shore Hospital
- Step Out at Ryde (SOAR)
These are groups of people with chronic lung condition and their friends and families who meet for social activities, educational lectures and to provide support to each other as they suffer from a chronic illness.
So how do I join a Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program?
Ask your GP or specialist to refer you. You need medical clearance to ensure that you are safe to exercise. Then you can contact us to book into a program at your nearest hospital.
