The aim of these specific programs within the Brain Injury Rehab Service is to restore as much function and independence as possible, while at the same time facilitating adjustment to disability, promoting self determination and enhancing quality of life. All activities/therapies are conducted in as close to home-like environment as possible.
A supportive environment exists for ongoing education and the promotion of research based practice within the unit.

Community Services provides supported accommodation and rehabilitation. The service works with adults who have experienced acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury, and with clients with developmental disability. Most clients also have complex care, challenging behaviour, or mental health issues. Clients have achieved significant milestones, as a result of continuing to develop strategies and tools to keep up with the latest research in rehabilitation and to build this knowledge into our practice.

Medical Services work in partnership with each Unit to facilitate individual rehabilitation programs for clients of the Centre. The medical staff includes the Directors of the Units, visiting medical and dental staff and the registrars in Rehabilitation Medicine.

The Developmental Disability Health Unit is a specialised health clinic at Royal Rehab for people with developmental disabilities. It's services include the Community Integration Program which leads the way forward in community inclusion for people with disabilities.

Home Based Rehabilitation Services (HBRS) provides a unique opportunity for clients to carry out their rehabilitation at their home. HBRS provides intensive short duration rehabilitation to clients who are residents of the Northern Sydney Area Health Service and who have suffered recent injury, illness or undergone surgery or have experienced an exacerbation of a chronic musculoskeletal or neurological condition.

Clients must be clinically appropriate and medically stable for the service, have functional, achievable rehabilitation goals, and be agreeable to receiving rehabilitation in their home. A minimum of two disciplines should be required and the client must have a GP who is familiar with their current medical needs.

The HBRS team consists of occupational therapists, physiotherapists, registered nurse (Manager), social worker and speech pathologist. Dietetics, neuropsychology and rehabilitation medical officer consultation is available, if required as part of the rehabilitation program. The type and frequency of the therapies will be determined by the clients needs and goals.

Referral for this service can be made by any member of the inpatient team or the clients doctor. Clients will be assessed by the HBRS Manager prior to discharge from hospital or commencement on the program. Enquiries and referrals can be directed to the Manager on (02) 98089687.

Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation
for People with an Acquired Brain Injury

The Neurobehavioural Rehabilitation Service is a new community reintegration service for people with acquired brain injury, set up as a joint venture between the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney and Rehability Australia. This service provides a continuum of assessment, rehabilitation and ongoing support.

People who acquire a brain injury can often experience significant cognitive, physical, social, behavioural and emotional
difficulties that can affect their ability to live independently in the community. The Service supports and enables people to regain the functional and social skills they need to attain a quality of life and to live a chosen lifestyle with as much autonomy as possible.

Approach

The Service uses the neurobehavioural approach developed by the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust in the UK. The neurobehavioural approach is proven to be effective in helping individuals with an acquired brain injury improve their functional skills and thereby reduce long-term care-costs.

The Service has a large inter-disciplinary team. A Senior Neuropsychologist/Clinical Psychologist leads the clinical service delivery. The support staff that work with service users are highly trained in order to deliver the interventions that are designed by the clinical team.

Each service user has an individual program of rehabilitation. This structured learning program includes personal and domestic activities of daily living, use of leisure time, community access skills, behavioural management interventions, sessions aimed at improving communication and mobilising skills, social skills training as well as vocational training and placements. The program is designed in such a way that large portions of it can be easily transferred to a new setting once an individual is discharged. Service users are encouraged to access the community with support for functional as well as social and leisure activities.
