SERVICES

ROYAL REHAB comprises individual units and services specialising in different fields of care. On this website you can look for detailed information on the care they provide, and for specific contact information. Below is a general description of their roles.


Adult Rehabilitation Service specialises in providing multi-disciplinary rehabilitation programs for people of working age who have sustained stroke, orthopaedic injuries, amputation, neurological diseases, non-traumatic brain injury, burns and brain tumours.

It comprises an inpatient and outpatient program, which offers a multi-disciplinary rehabilitation service on an inpatient basis. Community rehabilitation programs are also available to those living in the Northern Sydney Area.

It has specialised neurological services with close links to the RNSH Stroke hospital service, Stroke Recovery Association, RRCS Driver training program, ROYAL REHAB Home Based rehabilitation service as well as amputee clinics and spasticity clinics. In addition, the service is involved in several research programs including an NHMRC exercise program for stroke patients.


Aged Care Rehabilitation Service specialises in providing multi-disciplinary rehabilitation programs for residents of the Ryde/ Hunters Hill area over the age of 60 with rehabilitation needs following orthopaedic surgery, deconditioning following extended hospital stay and age related conditions such as Parkinson’s Disease, stroke and pain management. It is a 20-bed unit, which offers individualised rehabilitation on an in-patient basis. Community rehabilitation programs are also available to those living in the Ryde Hunters Hill Area.


Allied Health Services comprise Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Psychology, Recreation Services, Social Work and Speech Pathology. Works in partnership with the clinical units and other services of the Centre to provide individual rehabilitation programs for clients.


Brain Injury Unit is a statewide service providing rehabilitation for people who have sustained a traumatic brain injury through trauma. The Unit admits people with traumatic head injuries caused by motor vehicle accidents, falls, assaults, sporting injuries and penetrating injuries. Every client has individual conditions related to the type of injury and the sites of the brain affected. Programs are designed to address client’s individual issues and goals. It is a 16-bed unit which offers an individually tailored, multi-disciplinary service on an inpatient basis.


Clinical Support Services report directly to the Director of Medical Services and consist of the Clinical Information Department (CID), the FRS Dawes Library, Pharmacy and Radiography.


Corporate Support Services is a well skilled network of departments supporting the provision of best care for clients and residents. Together and individually, the departments provide integral support to both clinical and non-clinical services and are committed to achieving a high level of service. Building, Centre, Employee, Finance, IT, Food Services, Purchasing and Stores, Waste Management.

Disabilty Services Directorate includes The Extended Care Service (Weemala) (ECS) providing accommodation, support and recreation/leisure services for people between the ages of 16 to 60 with a primary diagnosis of physical disability. There are currently 42 people who live in ECS. ECS is in the process of facilitating community living options for a significant number of current residents. In addition, planning is taking place for the redevelopment of the remaining service. The Community Integration Program (Personal Support Services) (CIP) is increasingly considered a lead authority in community inclusion for people with disabilities. CIP specialises in the provision of home-based support and access to services for people with disabilities to enable them to lead valued lives in the community.


Medical Services work in partnership with each Unit to facilitate individual rehabilitation programs for clients of the Centre. The medical staff includes the Directors of the Units, visiting medical and dental staff and the registrars in Rehabilitation Medicine.

an occupational therapy sessionThe Nursing Service works in partnership with each clinical unit to facilitate programs, which enable clients and residents to achieve their rehabilitation and lifestyle goals. The ROYAL REHAB Nursing professionals holistically plan client’s physical, behavioural and psychosocial care, incorporating the broad theoretical knowledge of nursing practice. This ensures quality of care for people with significant health care and rehabilitation needs.


Pulmonary Rehabilitation Service is for people with chronic lung disease. It is a gentle exercise program, developed just for YOU by a physiotherapist. We look at the activities YOU are having trouble with and tailor your program to help you improve. It also includes education sessions to help you better understand your condition and how to stay well. Sessions include: how lungs work, coping with breathlessness, living with chronic illness, medications, diet, swallowing and energy management.


Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Unit offers a state-wide service to clients who have suffered traumatic and non-traumatic spinal cord injuries. It is a 20-bed unit, which offers individually tailored, multi-disciplinary rehabilitation programs. The aim of these specific programs is to restore as much function and independence as possible, while at the same time facilitating adjustment to disability, promoting self determination and enhancing quality of life.

 

Spinal Injury Outreach Service was established in July 2003. It is a NSW Department of Health initiative to address the ongoing and complex needs of the person with spinal cord injury, following discharge from hospital. The service offers its resources to clients and clinicians living in metropolitan and rural areas of New South Wales.

Home Based Rehabilitation Service (HBRS) provides intensive short duration rehabilitation to clients in their home environment. Clients including stroke, other neurologic conditions, orthopaedic conditions etc. can receive rehabilitation interventions at home.

The service accepts clients who are residents of the Northern Sydney Area Health services; have suffered recent injury, illness or undergone surgery or have experienced an exacerbation of a chronic musculoskeletal or neurological condition.

Clients must be clinical appropriate and medically stable for the service, have functional, achievable rehabilitation goals, and agreeable to receiving rehabilitation in their home. Clients are required to be supported by a GP.

The team consists of an occupational therapist, physiotherapist, registered nurse (coordinator), social worker and speech pathologist. Dietetics, neuropsychology, and medical officer consultation is available if required as part of the rehabilitation program.

The HBRS provides a unique opportunity for the client to carry out their rehabilitation in the home!

 


Brain Injury Community Rehabilitation Team (BICRT)

The Community Rehabilitation Team provides rehabilitation services to people living in the community who have sustained a traumatic brain injury. The staff of the team work together to help clients return to a fulfilling lifestyle and maximise their level of emotional, social, physical and intellectual functioning while encouraging independence. The team provides assistance in respect to relationships, health, learning, finances, work and leisure activities.

Driving Assessment Centre

The Driving Assessment Centre promotes independence in driving for people with a range of disabilities or medical problems. The Centre provides driving assessments and re-training programs and assists people with special needs who may need advice and assistance to regain their licence or acquire their licence for the first time.

Biomedical / Rehabilitation Engineering Unit

Rehabilitation Engineering services are delivered at ROYAL REHAB from the Neil Fitzer Rehabilitation Engineering Unit located on site and are available to all units of RRCS. The Unit designs and modifies equipment to meet the specified needs of people with disabilities. The Unit is administratively responsible to NSAHS and has a service agreement with ROYAL REHAB to provide professional and technical consultation on rehabilitation technology issues including client assessments. The Unit also provides technical support of design, fabrication, modification, testing and inspection of equipment used by clients. Other professional services are provided for clinical investigation or research at the ROYAL REHAB.

The Unit has access to the Neil Fitzer Foundation Trust Fund for financial assistance for professional development to improve evidence based practice.
