SPINAL OUTREACH SERVICE
The Spinal Outreach Service was established in July 2003. It is a NSW Department of Health Initiative to address the ongoing and complex needs of the person with Spinal Cord Injury, following discharge from hospital. The service offers it’s resources to clients and clinicians living in Metropolitan and Rural areas of New South Wales.
Referral Criteria
For Sydney Metropolitan clients admitted to hospital either acutely or following a readmission to hospital, referral is from the spinal units and is usually automatic.
Clients living in rural areas can contact us for advice via their clinician (GP, Community Nurse, Occupational Therapist)
Our Team
The team is made up of:
- Physiotherapists
- Registered Nurses
- Occupational Therapists
- Social Workers
- Case Manager
- Medical Specialists & Registrar
Our Services
Client Related
The multidisciplinary team will work together with the client, carer, clinicians and family to assist in the period of transition from hospital to home. Our aims are to assist with health issues as they arise, provide education and to facilitate community participation in terms of work, sport or leisure. The clinicians will meet with the clients.
Clinician Related
- Telephone, email and telehealth support can be offered to clinicians managing clients with SCI around the state upon request.
- Consultations and resources are available within the service.
- The service may provide contact details for providers who may be able to assist in the local area.
- Health professional education programmes may be offered upon request.
Rural Education & Clinic Visits
- Visits are conducted monthly throughout rural areas of NSW. Please see “News and Upcoming Events” for the schedule of activity.

The Spinal Outreach Service is located at the Royal Rehabilitation Centre Sydney and works in close collaboration with the Spinal Units at Royal Rehab, Royal North Shore Hospital and the Prince of Wales Hospital.
